Sedation & Anxiolysis in St. Louis

At Schlueter Periodontics & Implants, we understand that undergoing a dental procedure can be a source of anxiety and stress for many patients. Our goal is to make every visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible. To achieve this, we offer three levels of sedation tailored to meet the needs and preferences of our patients. Whether you’re undergoing a minor procedure or an extensive treatment, our sedation options can help you feel relaxed and at ease throughout your visit.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that is inhaled through a mask placed over your nose. It induces a state of relaxation and helps alleviate anxiety without putting you to sleep.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide

  • Quick Onset and Recovery: The effects of nitrous oxide begin within minutes of inhalation and wear off quickly once the mask is removed.
  • No Need for an Escort: Patients can drive themselves home and return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure.
  • Minimal Preparation: Little to no preparation is required before administering nitrous oxide.

Ideal For

  • Patients with mild to moderate anxiety.
  • Procedures that are relatively short and less invasive.
  • Individuals who prefer a quick recovery and minimal downtime.

How Nitrous Oxide Works

When you breathe in nitrous oxide, it produces a sense of euphoria and relaxation. You remain awake and responsive throughout the procedure but will feel more comfortable and less anxious.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a sedative pill prior to your appointment. This type of sedation is deeper than nitrous oxide and can provide a more profound sense of relaxation.

Benefits of Oral Sedation

  • Deep Relaxation: Oral sedatives help patients achieve a state of deep relaxation, making it easier to tolerate longer and more complex procedures.
  • Amnesic Effect: Many patients experience an amnesic effect, meaning they have little to no memory of the procedure.
  • Easy Administration: Taking a pill is simple and non-invasive.

Ideal For

  • Patients with moderate to severe anxiety.
  • Lengthy or more invasive procedures.
  • Individuals who prefer not to remember the procedure.

Pre-Procedure Requirements

  • Pre-Workup: A preliminary assessment by Dr. Scott Schlueter or Dr. Trinity Boszko is necessary to determine the appropriate dosage and ensure the patient’s safety.
  • Escort Required: Due to the sedative effects, patients will need someone to drive them to and from the appointment.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Patients should not drive or return to work for at least 24 hours after taking the sedative.

How Oral Sedation Works

Before your appointment, you will take the prescribed sedative pill. By the time you arrive at the office, you will be feeling significantly relaxed. The sedative’s effects last for the duration of the procedure and wear off gradually over the next 24 hours.

Intravenous Conscious Sedation

Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation is the deepest form of sedation we offer. It involves administering sedative medications directly into your bloodstream through an IV line, allowing for precise control over the level of sedation.

Benefits of Intravenous Conscious Sedation

  • Deepest Sedation: Provides the highest level of sedation without putting you completely under.
  • Immediate Effect: The sedative effects begin almost immediately after administration.
  • Customizable: The level of sedation can be adjusted throughout the procedure as needed.

Ideal For

  • Patients with severe anxiety or fear of dental procedures.
  • Extensive or highly invasive treatments.
  • Individuals who require multiple procedures in one visit.

Pre-Procedure Requirements

  • Pre-Workup: A thorough medical evaluation is required to ensure the patient is a suitable candidate for IV sedation.
  • Escort Required: Patients must have someone drive them to and from the appointment.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Similar to oral sedation, patients should avoid driving or returning to work for at least 24 hours post-procedure.

How It Works:

An IV line is inserted into your arm, and sedative medications are administered directly into your bloodstream. You will enter a state of deep relaxation but remain conscious and able to respond to instructions. The effects of the sedative wear off gradually over the following day.
